A March 9th 2016, CNBC report states:
Paper, which represents a good chunk of the recycling market for the major waste haulers, is in a downturn that began almost five years ago. Aluminum, a raw material used in producing beverage cans, is at depressed prices and feeling the effects of a supply glut and slowing demand from China. And the decline in plastic scrap is due to oil prices and overcapacity in the polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, resin manufacturing industry. Waste Management, the nation's largest garbage company, sold or jettisoned 30 recycling facilities over the past few years and about 900 employees were affected.

On October 5th, 2017, Pulp & Paper Week group released a report that explains how China's ban on recovered paper imports is negatively impacting the commodity's value in domestic mills. The report explains that "the across the board $55 average decline was the largest ever, exceeding a $50 drop in November 2008 during the Great Recession," and goes on to state "the major price drop in the last month slashed an estimated 43% or $350 million on an monthly basis in the value of US recovered paper, when compared with the estimated value in July."

Vail Honeywagon has always taken a conservative stance when considering price increases for our recycle services, but with the changing commodity markets that have been down for over five years and increased transportation costs, we have had to make adjustments in our pricing to reflect the inequity. Our latest recycle price adjustment is a result of Consumer Price Index changes and increased transportation costs over the last twelve months, it is necessary for us to continue to offer superior waste diversion hauling services.

We also need your help in keeping the recycle material clean when we send it to market. We are fined for contamination and it is not financially sustainable to continue to send contaminated loads to the recycle center. "We" need to eliminate plastic bags, packing material, Styrofoam and other contaminates from the recycling stream. Please see the "Recycling Guidelines" section on our webpage at /recycling-guidelines.cfm if you have any questions in regards to responsible recycling and what products are acceptable in your area.

We value your business and our place in this community.
